In October 2024, Independence Excavating’s Paving Division broke ground on a 12,500 SY concrete parking apron to support a new Customs and Border Patrol office at Pensacola International Airport.
Scope included clearing two acres of wooded terrain, 16,000 CY of excavation, and installation of 450 LF of 36” and 48” RCP with four cast-in-place, aircraft-rated inlets. A unique element of this project was the FAA P-304 base course, produced on-site via pugmill in partnership with a local subcontractor—an approach that delivered both efficiency and cost savings.
Crews stabilized the subgrade ahead of the holidays and placed over 400 CY of FAA P-501 concrete per night using our slipform paver. The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget in March 2025.
Assistant Airport Director of Planning and Engineering, Roy Remington, praised the effort as “the best project I’ve been a part of since starting my career here over a decade ago.”
