Demolition of Huron Hospital

Last fall, Independence Excavating and Precision Environmental were awarded the contract to perform the asbestos abatement and complete demolition of the former Huron Hospital complex in East Cleveland, Ohio. The project will clear the site of all structures including buildings, parking surfaces and utilities, creating a green space ready for future development.

Precision Environmental jump‐started the project with an aggressively scheduled scope to remove all hazardous material from the buildings. In close coordination with Precision Environmental, Independence Excavating will overlap demolition work with the remedial activities to complete the project ahead of schedule. Structures to be removed include a 5‐level parking garage, several multi‐story buildings, as well as the original 9‐story bed tower built in 1931. All basement walls, floors and foundation concrete is to be excavated and completely removed from the site, which will be recycled. In total, we anticipate to recycle about 35,000 tons of concrete from the project. Approximately 20,000 cubic yards of material will be imported to the site to fill all basement areas back to existing grade.
